Working with Pages

An overviw of a Wordpress "Page"

Anatomy of a Page

Pages are "static" elements of a blog and are used to create content that does not change very often. Many themes in Wordpress allow for a page menu across the top (1,2,3,4 above), or the Pages widget (5)can be added to the sidebar of a blog. Pages can supplement a blog with more information, and Pages are also used to create more traditional "Websites" where the blogging feature is less prominent or relied on.
6. A "Parent" page
7. "Sub-pages" or "child" pages. These two pages belong to the parent "Green IT" listed above.
Note: Only "Parent" pages show in the menus which are a part of a theme (1,2,3.4) above. Sub pages show in the widget in the sidebar (7).

Creating a New Page by Clicking the "Write" option, then Click "Page"

Note: When you first click "Write", by default you will be writing a new "Post". You must click "Page" to write a new Page.

Add A Title and Your Content to the Page

Note: The Page title will appear in the menu on Wordpress themes, so make sure it's rather short.

If your Page is a Parent and is not a Sub-page, click "Save" to save as a draft or "Publish" to publish immediately

Note: Whether you save or publish, you can always make edits later.

You may view your blog and see the page by clicking it in the menu or sidebar

Editing an exisitng Page: Click Manage>Pages, and Click your Page title

You will be brought to the Editor again to make your changes

Make your edits and click Save

Creating Parent Pages and Sub-Pages: Use the Drop down menu under the Text Editor to choose the Page level

By default, all Pages are Parent (or "Main") pages and will show up on a top menu. To make a Page a Sub-page, you must designate its Parent

Choose the Parent Page from the drop down menu and Click "Save"

You can always undo this or change a parent. All Page editing items are availale from the Manage>Pages option.

Other Options: Closing Comments and Pings: Uncheck the Boxes and click "Save"

Often times you may want to close comments on a Page, or pings and trackbacks. By default these are left open. (If you wan to invite responses, leave the comments open... if not, you may close them.) Comments and Pings are set on a page by page basis, so you may disable them on some and leave them open on others.

Extra: Making your "Front" page a Static Page instead of a blog page: Click Settings>Reading

Click Static Page, Choose your New Front Page and the new "Posts" (blog) page, and Click "Save"

This also can be editted later by returning here.
